Job Description

The Dance Team Coach (part-time) provides artistic leadership, instruction, and administrative oversight for the Tulane University “Shockwave” Dance Team within the Tulane Bands department. Reporting to the Director of Bands, this position is responsible for coaching, choreographing, teaching rehearsals, and staffing performances for Spirit events (including football, basketball, and Mardi Gras) and possible national competition. The position works in collaboration with Tulane Bands, Athletics, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and Student Affairs.

The Coach oversees team operations including scheduling, communications, collaboration with Tulane Athletics and Student Affairs, facilities coordination, purchasing, and fundraising. The position requires strong organizational skills, creative vision, and the ability to mentor student performers in a high-visibility athletic and performance environment. The Dance Team Coach plays a critical role in representing Tulane University at athletic, community, and competitive events while fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, safety, and school spirit. The position may also include adjunct instruction in the Department of Theatre and Dance; this is an additional opportunity with additional pay should the candidate have a terminal degree and/or extensive industry experience.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelors Degree

• Demonstrated experience in secondary and/or collegiate dance performance, coaching, and choreography

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in dance or related.

• Collegiate dance team coaching and experience.

• Experience preparing teams for spirit and competition dance environments.

• Demonstrated expertise in dance technique, choreography, and performance preparation

• Experience coaching or teaching in a competitive or athletic performance environment.

• Strong leadership, mentoring, and student development skills.

• Ability to manage rehearsals efficiently and maintain high performance standards.

• Excellent written verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Strong organizational and administrative skills.

• Ability to collaborate effectively with Athletics, Bands, the Dance department, and student affairs. Knowledge of collegiate competition standards and safety requirements.

• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional travel, as required by performance and athletic schedules.
