Mechanical Technician III

Pay Rate Range: $25.00 - $30.00/hr. (DOE)

Employment Type: Contract (12 Months, Potential Extension)

Schedule: Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM, with expected overtime and periodic off-hours coverage as needed

Location: Newton, NC 28658 (100% Onsite)

Tekberry is seeking an experienced and hands-on Mechanical Technician III to support manufacturing engineering projects focused on equipment installations, capacity expansion, line startup, debugging, and mechanical process improvements within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role plays a critical part in supporting new equipment installations and ensuring manufacturing systems are fully operational and ready for production.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Technician III supports manufacturing engineering projects involving equipment installation, startup, troubleshooting, process optimization, and operational readiness activities. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, experience supporting manufacturing equipment installations, and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering, operations, vendors, and suppliers to ensure successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Installation & Project Support

  • Support manufacturing engineering projects focused on capacity additions and equipment installations.
  • Lead and participate in equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and debugging activities.
  • Assist with preparing production lines and equipment for Operations Receivership.
  • Support project plans, schedules, milestones, and installation timelines.
  • Work closely with vendors and suppliers during equipment installation and startup activities.
  • Coordinate project activities across multiple manufacturing locations, including Newton and Hickory facilities.

Mechanical Troubleshooting & Technical Support

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of mechanical systems and manufacturing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving:
    • Pumps
    • Motors
    • Conveyors
    • Hydraulics
    • Pneumatics
    • Bearings
    • Gear systems
  • Align, test, and calibrate mechanical systems following installation activities.
  • Diagnose equipment failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and subject matter experts to identify root causes and implement robust solutions.

Process Improvement & Reliability

  • Design and implement mechanical solutions that improve manufacturing capability and equipment performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, safety, and uptime.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and manufacturing optimization efforts.
  • Manage spare parts identification and support storeroom inventory setup and maintenance.
  • Assist with development and implementation of equipment upgrades and process improvements.

Documentation & Training

  • Develop, update, and maintain engineering documentation, operating procedures, and technical records.
  • Interpret and utilize:
    • Blueprints
    • Technical drawings
    • Schematics
    • Equipment manuals
  • Support training activities related to equipment installations and operational changes.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and project records using computerized systems and documentation tools.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain safe work practices and proactively identify hazardous conditions.
  • Follow all company safety policies and manufacturing procedures.
  • Support compliance with operational, environmental, and safety standards.
  • Promote a safe and organized work environment throughout all project activities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate Degree required.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience supporting new equipment installations within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • Expertise with:
    • Hydraulics
    • Pneumatics
    • Bearings
    • Gear systems
    • Conveyor systems
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Proficiency using:
    • Hand tools
    • Power tools
    • Diagnostic equipment
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with CMMS systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and manufacturing processes.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting commercial manufacturing equipment installations and startups.
  • Project leadership or project management experience.
  • Experience managing project milestones, timelines, and budgets.
  • Vendor and supplier management experience.
  • CAD experience.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing capacity expansion projects.
  • Mechanical, industrial, millwright, HVAC, or welding certifications.
  • OSHA or other industrial safety certifications.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel between Newton and Hickory, NC manufacturing facilities as needed.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced manufacturing and engineering project environment.
  • Frequent interaction with engineering, operations, maintenance, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Combination of equipment installation, troubleshooting, and project support activities.
  • Requires standing, walking, troubleshooting equipment, and working throughout active manufacturing areas.
  • Overtime and periodic off-hours support may be required based on project schedules and installation timelines.
