Under the general direction of the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) serves as a lead for developing and conducting statewide training sessions for regulators, assessing the effectiveness and enforceability of pesticide use laws and regulations, and analyzing and developing enforceable environmental mitigation strategies.

The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) independently identifies problems, develops courses of action, and conducts complex and scientific analyses and investigations related to regulatory issues and pesticide use enforcement. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) may serve as a liaison with other branches in the Department, the County Agricultural Commissioners (CACs), and other local, state, and federal entities. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will demonstrate DPR’s organizational values of Accountability, Integrity, Collaboration, and Continuous Improvement when carrying out the department’s mission and vision.

Working Conditions

The incumbent will work in a single-floor building, under artificial light, sit for moderate periods of time, and use a computer for up to eight hours a day. Statewide overnight travel will be required and travel by automobile or air will be required to different areas of the State.

NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
